Family counselling and Intervention

11th Apr, 2023

One of the many important services provided by the hard-working, caring and professional team at Invictus Solutions is Family Counselling.

Family Counselling and Intervention is a therapeutic approach that helps families deal with problems that are causing conflict and tension within the family unit.

We provide counselling that is of benefit to all kinds of families, be they nuclear families, blended families, single-parent families or extended families.

Our aim through these sessions is to improve communication and understanding within the family, and to promote healthy relationships and positive interactions for all.

There are many issues that may require family counselling. The most common problems  include:

  • Communication Problems: When family members are not getting along well and communicating properly with one another, it can lead to misunderstandings which in turn create to a lot of tension and conflict within the household. Family counselling is an excellent way for family members to learn how to communicate more effectively with each other and work together constructively to resolve their issues.
  • Pre-Marital Counselling: The goal here is to help build a strong, healthy, fulfilling and long-lasting marriage by: assisting couples to identify their expectations for their marriage; facilitating communication and conflict resolution skills; educating the pair about practical aspects of married life (finances, household responsibilities, family planning etc.); advising the couple on the emotional and psychological aspects of marriage (including the importance of trust, intimacy and commitment) and exploring the couple’s shared values and beliefs.
  • Parent and Child Conflict: Even if one child is in conflict with one or both parents, this can cause immense stress within the family, where the other children can also be impacted. We help the conflicting parties by demonstrating how to communicate better and work through their issues together.
  • Financial Issues: Money problems can cause a lot of stress and tension within the family. Family counselling can help family members learn how to manage their finances more effectively and work together to overcome financial challenges.
  • Mental Health Issues: If a family member has a mental health issue, it can be difficult for the family to understand and support them. Family counselling can help family members to learn more about mental health and how to support their loved one who is struggling.
  • Blended Families: When families merge together, it can be challenging for everyone to adjust to new dynamics and relationships. Family counselling can help blended families work through these challenges and build stronger relationships.
  • Alcohol or Drug Abuse: If a family member is struggling with substance abuse, it can affect the whole family. Family counselling helps family members understand the addiction and work together to support their loved one during the period of recovery.

Some of the most common forms of family counselling include:

  • Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) which focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours. It can be effective in addressing communication problems, parent-child conflicts, substance abuse and mental health issues.
  • Solution-focused therapy which concentrates on finding solutions to problems and setting goals for the future. It can be effective in addressing divorce and separation, blended families and financial problems.
  • Narrative therapy involves exploring the stories and narratives that families tell themselves about their lives and relationships. It can be effective in addressing communication problems, parent-child conflicts and mental health issues.
  • Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is a type of therapy that focuses on understanding and changing emotional responses to situations. It can be effective in addressing communication problems, parent-child conflicts, and divorce and separation.
